What Chiastolite means
Slice chiastolite across its length and a dark cross appears inside the pale stone, carbon drawn into that shape as the crystal grew through clay-rich rock. Pilgrims returning from Santiago de Compostela carried pieces home as keepsakes, the cross already there before anyone carved it.
Emotional properties
Carry chiastolite on a day when an old rumour or a label still clings to you, something you never asked for and can't quite scrub off. Its cross sits in the stone the same way, an internal seam rather than a decoration added afterward. There is a kind of honesty in wearing a mark you can't hide, so stop trying to hide yours.
Spiritual properties
Chiastolite takes its name from the Greek letter chi, the X its dark arms make across the stone. A crossroads is the oldest picture of a decision, and this is one you can hold: when two roads meet in your life, trace each arm back to the centre before choosing. The centre is where both paths start.
Physical properties
Chiastolite's cross still carries the grain of the rock it grew inside, dense and a little rough against the thumb. Press it into your palm when the ground under a decision keeps shifting, literally or otherwise. The weight alone tends to pull your attention back down to your feet.
Care and cleansing
A hard knock is a bigger risk to chiastolite's cross than any rinse, so cool water and a soft cloth are all it needs. Rest it on bare earth overnight to recharge, answering to the ground it formed inside. Tuck it into a drawer wrapped in cloth, since a knock against a harder stone is what actually threatens it.
