What Lodestone means
Rare in nature and prized wherever it turned up, lodestone is magnetite that has already picked up its own magnetic field. Where an ordinary stone sits still, this one visibly pulls.
Emotional properties
Long before compasses were mass-produced, a sailor with a true lodestone held something no chart could give: a direction that did not depend on the weather. Carry it when your own sense of direction has gone vague, a decision you keep deferring because no path feels obviously right. Its pull does not pick the path for you, only steadies the needle enough to notice which way you keep drifting back to.
Spiritual properties
In 1088 the Song Dynasty scholar Shen Kuo recorded that a needle rubbed on lodestone points south, though never quite true, always a little to the east. A bearing that is nearly right can feel right for years before the error shows. Ask it, honestly, whether your stated direction and your daily choices still agree.
Physical properties
A strong lodestone will visibly tug at a paperclip from an inch away, proof that its pull is not just a figure of speech. Rest one on the desk during a stretch of hours spent sitting too still, and let the sight of that small tug remind you to stand and move your own body. It asks for motion the same way it asks iron filings to gather at its poles, gently but persistently.
Care and cleansing
Magnetite rusts in damp air, and lodestone is no exception, so keep it away from water entirely. A dry cloth cleanses it, and a morning of direct sun charges it. Store it on a dry saucer of iron filings, the way hoodoo workers in the American South have long fed their lodestones to keep them strong.
A question to sit with
Where has your stated direction stopped matching your daily choices?
