What Red jasper means
Red jasper owes its colour to hematite scattered through microcrystalline quartz, and Egyptians carved it into the tyet, the girdle of Isis, laid at a mummy's neck for protection. It works less like a spark than a bed of coals that never quite goes out.
Emotional properties
A woman rests her bare hands on a lion's jaws in the tarot's Strength card, with no weapon and no hurry. Red jasper lends that unhurried nerve to problems force will not shift, a teenager who has stopped talking, a skill that refuses to come, a landlord who never answers. Go back to the problem tomorrow at the same hour, the stone in your pocket, and push no harder than you did today.
Spiritual properties
Tumbled red jasper is one of the commonest stones in any rock-shop bowl, cheap, sturdy and seldom anyone's favourite. Root work suits that sort of stone, because the root is the plain part of a practice: turning up, sitting down, doing it again. A piece under the meditation cushion does its work by staying put, one dull red weight between you and the floor.
Physical properties
Jasper is tough, fine-grained quartz, hard enough to take real pressure without a mark, which makes a tumbled piece a fair stone for the arches of the feet. Sit down after a long shift on your feet, set the stone on the floor and roll it slowly under each arch in turn, heel to toe and back. By the tenth pass under each foot, the shift is properly over.
Care and cleansing
Red jasper needs no special handling, being as hard as quartz and just as untroubled by water. Clean it at the sink with soap and a brush, bury it overnight in a flowerpot to recharge, and let it rattle loose in a bag with other jaspers.
A question to sit with
What steady effort are you underrating because it doesn't look dramatic?
