What Septarian means

Septarian nodules are concretions that hardened inside buried sea-floor mud and then cracked from within, the cracks later filled by yellow calcite. Septum, Latin for a partition, named it, for the calcite walls that divide each nodule into cells.

Emotional properties

The Six of Pentacles shows a rich man holding scales in one hand while he gives coins to the poor with the other. The friend who always pays, always drives and always remembers the birthdays is often the one who never lets a favour be returned, and septarian is meant for that friend. Letting someone else pick up the bill is a gift to them as well.

Spiritual properties

Sellers gave septarian the newer nickname dragon stone for the scaled pattern its cracked surface makes, not for any old legend attached to it. Root and throat together ask for something specific: a truth spoken from a settled, unshaken stance rather than a reactive one. The honest thing that has been cracking under the surface comes out steadier with the feet flat and the breath slow.

Physical properties

A septarian half offers two surfaces to the fingers, the rough grey-brown rind and the glassy calcite crystals at its centre. After hours of flat glass under the fingertips, phone, tablet and trackpad, rest them on the rind and then on the crystals, and let them read the difference. Fingertips made for texture get very little of it in a day of tapping.

Care and cleansing

The yellow calcite in a septarian's cracks scratches easily and etches in vinegar or any acidic cleaner, so plain water, briefly, is all it should meet. Recharge it overnight on garden soil and let it live on a shelf by itself.
