What Selenite means

Selene, the Greek moon goddess, lends selenite her name, for a pearly sheen like moonlight held inside gypsum. Most wands sold as selenite are satin spar, a fibrous gypsum from Morocco; clear selenite beams in Mexico's Naica mine run past ten metres.

Emotional properties

Pass a selenite wand slowly from head to feet when you get home, as if brushing the day off a coat. The gesture draws a line: what happened at work stays on the far side of it. Keys on the hook and clothes changed, the evening starts on this side.

Spiritual properties

A plate of selenite is where many practitioners rest their other stones overnight, trusting its calm to pass into whatever sits on it. Surroundings work on a person the same way, a little at a time and without any touch at all. Notice what you have been sitting near lately that asks nothing of you and calms you anyway, and move it closer.

Physical properties

Most selenite wands are light enough to hold overhead, one end in each hand, for as long as a slow stretch takes. Lift one that way first thing in the morning and reach from the heels up through the crown of the head before the day starts pulling you forward. Satin spar snaps if dropped, so lower it the way you lifted it, slowly.

Care and cleansing

Gypsum, selenite's mineral, scratches under a fingernail and dissolves slowly in water; even a short soak can cloud and pit it. A dry paintbrush or a pass through incense smoke cleanses it without a drop of water. It charges itself, and it keeps best wrapped in cloth, out of damp rooms such as the bathroom.
