What Zircon means

Zircon bends and splits light more than almost any other natural gem, and colourless stones were long passed off as diamond. Cubic zirconia is something else, a lab-grown oxide of zirconium, the metal first found in zircon and named after it.

Emotional properties

Zircon partners the World, the card of a long journey finished, and it belongs to the moment right after something big is done, the last page written or the final payment made. That moment often feels flatter than expected, so mark it on purpose, with a toast or a ring worn for the first time. Completion deserves more ceremony than most people give it.

Spiritual properties

Grains of zircon recovered from Western Australia are the oldest known fragments of the Earth's crust, over four billion years old and still recognisably crystalline. A zircon in a ring is far younger, but it is the same stubborn mineral, and beside that kind of staying power the worry you carried in this morning is a brief thing.

Physical properties

Denser than ruby or sapphire, zircon rests on the hand with a heft out of proportion to its size, even as a small faceted stone. Close a hand around one for a slow stretch at the end of the day, heels pressed down and the top of the head lifting, the whole body lengthening at once. Root and crown, the two chakras it favours, are the two ends of that stretch.

Care and cleansing

Zircon's facet edges wear and chip easily, even though it is fairly hard, so give each stone its own compartment and take a zircon ring off for housework. Long, bright sun can fade some heat-coloured blue zircon back towards brown. Brush it clean in soapy water, and let it charge overnight on a piece of hematite.

A question to sit with

If nothing you carried today had to last, what would you set down?
