What Mookaite means
Mookaite began about a hundred million years ago as ooze on a shallow sea floor, the silica skeletons of radiolarians that later hardened into the jasper of Western Australia's Kennedy Range. It is named for Mooka Creek, near where it is quarried.
Emotional properties
A training block, a deadline pushed twice, a goal that keeps asking for one more week: effort like that rarely feels like progress from inside it. Carry mookaite through that stretch and let its own patience argue otherwise, a stone for which a hundred million years count as ordinary. What looks like standing still up close often turns out, from far enough away, to have been moving the whole time.
Spiritual properties
Colour came to mookaite long after the stone itself, as iron-rich water seeped through the rock near the surface and stained it red, mustard and plum. Sitting with it invites a wider view of your own timeline, that who you seem to be now may still be added to later, not fixed at the start. The pattern is never finished until long after the events that shaped it.
Physical properties
Silica makes mookaite hard enough to outlast the softer rock around it as the Kennedy Range wears down. Carry it on a long walk or any task that runs longer than you expected, a reminder in the pocket that endurance is mostly just continuing. Its rough face is easy to find by feel alone, without needing to look down.
Care and cleansing
Tap water and a stiff brush do mookaite no harm; dense silica like this shrugs off scrubbing that would dull a softer stone. A night buried in soil or an afternoon of sun will charge it. Store it wherever is handy, since a loose pocket suits it as well as a box.
