What Moonstone means

Built from two feldspars grown together in fine layers, moonstone scatters light between those layers into the drifting glow called adularescence. Florida made it the state gem in 1970 to honour the moon landings launched from its coast, though none is found there.

Emotional properties

Count the phases in one ordinary day: confident at breakfast, doubtful by lunch, level again by evening. Moonstone's shimmer shifts like that as you tilt it, never gone, only moved to another part of the stone. Wear it through the swing and let the swing complete itself instead of fighting the down side of it.

Spiritual properties

Pliny the Elder wrote of selenitis, a moon-stone said to hold an image of the moon that waxed and waned from day to day, though he passed it on only as a report. The moon itself is always half lit; what changes is how much of that bright half faces us. Not every night calls for a full moon, and this stone has never asked to be one.

Physical properties

Moonstone's glow comes from thin, alternating layers inside an otherwise ordinary feldspar, built the way tide lines build on sand, one on top of the last. Notice, over a month of carrying it, how your own energy rises and falls on a schedule that has nothing to do with your calendar. Naming that private tide, even only to yourself, is often enough to stop fighting its low part.

Care and cleansing

Moonstone cleaves cleanly along two flat planes, so a hard knock can split it straight through; keep it well clear of harder stones. Clean it with a short rinse in cool water, then charge it under moonlight rather than the sun. It is happiest in a pouch by itself, away from the rest of a collection.

A question to sit with

Are the low days of your month something you still apologise for?
