What Picture jasper means
Picture jasper carries bands of tan, brown and cream laid down in volcanic ash, and the swirl often settles into something that reads like a horizon, a dune, a distant treeline. Oregon's Biggs Junction has produced some of the most vivid examples.
Emotional properties
Hand a slab of picture jasper to three people and each will find a different scene in it, and none of them will be wrong. Its bands leave room for your own imagination, room a crowded week has usually used up. The same slab can show a river on Monday and a ridge on Friday.
Spiritual properties
No two slabs of picture jasper are cut to show quite the same scene, ash and iron settling into whatever shape the particular rock allowed. Meditating with one is closer to reading clouds than following a fixed method, letting a shape suggest itself rather than searching for one. Some pattern in your own recent days has probably gone unnoticed this way too, dismissed as coincidence rather than read as a shape worth its attention. Meaning here is found, not handed down.
Physical properties
On a polished slab of picture jasper the bands lie perfectly flush, so only the eye can follow them, never the fingertip. Trace one anyway, seam by seam, as you would a route across a map, when restlessness has nowhere else to go. The fingers slow to the pace of the eye and find something worth finishing.
Care and cleansing
At close to quartz's hardness, picture jasper takes soap, water and a scrubbing brush without harm. Set it on a sunny garden wall to charge, and store it separately, since it will scratch softer stones such as calcite or fluorite.
A question to sit with
Which horizon have you been missing without realising how much?
