What Prehnite means
Hendrik von Prehn brought the first specimens of this pale green mineral home from the Cape, and it is often called the first mineral named for a person. It grows in rounded, grape-like clusters inside old volcanic rock, never shouting, settling instead into a soft, even glow.
Emotional properties
Four times now the difficult conversation has been rehearsed in the shower, and it still has not happened. Prehnite eases the grip of that rehearsing, its green too pale to argue with. Say the first sentence as it comes, unpolished, and leave the rest to the room.
Spiritual properties
Many pieces from Mali carry dark needles of epidote straight through their pale green, and the stone is no less calm for them. Hold one while you think about a problem you have not solved, and leave the problem where it is rather than working at it. The needles never dissolved into the green; the green grew around them.
Physical properties
Prehnite's rounded clusters fit into a cupped palm the way a handful of grapes would, smooth all over with no sharp edge anywhere. That roundness settles best against the ribs, just below the breastbone, where a held breath is often slow to let go. Nothing here has any point or corner, which is the whole comfort, nothing to brace against.
Care and cleansing
Anything as hard as quartz will scratch prehnite, which sits just below it on the hardness scale, and a hard knock can chip a rounded cluster. Blow a slow breath across it to cleanse it, set it in early morning light to charge, and wrap it in cloth for storing.
