What Rhodonite means
Rhodonite, orlets to the people of the Urals, has been carved into vases and bowls at Yekaterinburg's lapidary works since the nineteenth century. Black veins of manganese oxide cut through its rose-pink like an old scar, proof that damage and beauty can share one stone.
Emotional properties
An old grudge rarely announces when it has finished being useful; it just keeps costing you long after the original wrong stopped mattering to anyone but you. Hold the stone while you name precisely what you are still carrying, then weigh whether it still earns its place today. Some of it will be worth keeping, and the rest can be said aloud once and left on the table beside the stone.
Spiritual properties
In 1906 a tomb of pink Ural rhodonite, carved from a single block, was set over Empress Maria Alexandrovna in St Petersburg's Peter and Paul Cathedral. Forgiveness rarely finishes in one sitting either, however much an apology might promise otherwise. Return to the same old hurt more than once with this stone in hand, chipping a little more away each time. What is left standing at the end is allowed to look different from what you first imagined carving.
Physical properties
Rhodonite belongs to the Six of Cups, the tarot's card of childhood, where two children hand each other flowers in an old courtyard. Carry it to the park and take a turn on the swings, the stone zipped into a pocket, moving the way a body moved before it learned to be careful. Legs pumping and hands on the chains, the body remembers a rhythm it had at seven.
Care and cleansing
A fall onto tile can split rhodonite along one of its two cleavages, which cross at nearly a right angle. Water does it no harm: wash it freely, charge it with the ring of a singing bowl and let a cloth-lined drawer hold it.
A question to sit with
Which old wound have you kept sharp instead of letting it heal?
