What Variscite means

Apple-green nodules of variscite form where phosphate-rich water seeps through aluminium-rich rock, and its name comes from Variscia, an old Latin name for the Vogtland in Saxony. It is often mistaken for green turquoise, and Utah stone was once sold as Utahlite.

Emotional properties

The green of variscite is the pale, milky green of a sheltered bay, the calm side of a crossing. Hold it after a hard stretch has finally ended, when you are safe but have not yet noticed. It gives the relief somewhere to land.

Spiritual properties

Clear, visible crystals of variscite are rare; nearly all of it grows as dense nodules, every grain too fine for the eye to pick out. Much inner work runs the same way, with no single breakthrough to point to, only a steadiness that has filled in grain by grain.

Physical properties

Slightly waxy under the thumb, variscite is softer than most green stones sold beside it. On the long sit of a journey, a ferry or a slow train, it keeps the body company while there is nothing to do but be carried. Rest it on a knee, look out of the window, and let the travelling do the work.

Care and cleansing

Porous like turquoise, variscite drinks in water, oils and perfume, all of which dull its green. A soft dry cloth cleans it, an hour next to an amethyst geode charges it, and it rests best in a lined box of its own.
