What Emerald means
Emerald's inclusions are so common that jewellers have a name for them, jardin, French for garden, grown right into the green. Most stones you will ever hold carry that garden visibly, since a flawless emerald is rare enough to be its own kind of stone.
Emotional properties
A jeweller grading emerald expects to find fractures, and marks down only the ones that cloud the colour. Try grading your own week the same way: which flaws dim anything, and which are simply there? Cross the harmless ones off before you judge the rest.
Spiritual properties
Miners worked emerald out of the Egyptian desert long before Colombia became its more famous source, and the stone has carried an association with renewal for about as long. Sitting with it favours a love or a commitment that is still actively growing rather than one already settled into its final shape. Its green never sits still under the light, deepening and lightening by the angle you hold it. Revisit that commitment once a season and ask what it needs now.
Physical properties
Pliny wrote that gem engravers rested their eyes on emerald's green between cuts, and the habit is an easy one to borrow at a screen. Every hour or so, look away from the glare and into the stone for as long as it takes the green to deepen. Hold it by the edges; its inner fractures make it more brittle than its hardness suggests.
Care and cleansing
Most emerald is filled with oil or resin, so keep it away from heat, ultrasonic cleaners and solvents, all of which can strip the fill and dull its clarity. Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth rather than soaking it. An evening on the sill once the sun has moved off charges it; store it apart from harder stones.
