What Jade means
What is sold as jade is really two different minerals, jadeite and nephrite, related only by the toughness and colour that earned them one shared name. Neolithic carvers worked it into axes and blades long before anyone smelted metal, so it stood for endurance before it stood for beauty.
Emotional properties
When the people around you are loud with worry, you are often the one who keeps doing the next small thing. Jade belongs in that hand, since few stones take a knock as well as it does. Through the long wait for news, it is the one thing that does not ask you to hold it together.
Spiritual properties
Carvers in ancient China prized jade above gold, reserving it for objects meant to outlast the people who commissioned them. Take the same long view of work meant for people you will never meet: the careful record, the tree planted for shade you will not sit in. Its toughness comes from a mat of interlocking fibres or grains, stronger together than any single strand could be.
Physical properties
Collectors in China rub a favourite jade piece between their fingers for years, and the handling is meant to bring up its shine. Borrow the habit on a long walk, working the stone in one hand in time with your stride. Before long your stride evens out into a pace you could keep for miles.
Care and cleansing
Dyed or waxed jade wants only a damp wipe, because soaking can strip the finish; untreated jade is tough enough for the tap and a soft brush. Tuck it into the soil of a potted plant overnight to charge it; after that it can ride loose in a pocket, since little it meets there will mark it.
A question to sit with
Who will be using what you make now, long after you have put it down?
