What Ocean jasper means

Ocean jasper comes from one stretch of Madagascar's north-west coast, an orbicular jasper whose rings grew outward from tiny seed points as silica crystallised in old volcanic rock. Neighbouring orbs pressed against one another as they grew, which is why some rings are flattened into polygons.

Emotional properties

Check how many times today you looked for a reply that was never going to come any faster for the looking. Keep ocean jasper in the hand you would otherwise reach for the phone with. What arrives late still counts as arriving.

Spiritual properties

The original ocean jasper quarry could only be reached when the tide pulled back far enough, so early collectors worked in a narrow window and then waited for the sea to allow them back. Much of that first deposit is gone now, mined out or claimed again by the water. Some windows do not reopen, and the work done inside them is worth exactly what it cost to reach.

Physical properties

Ocean jasper's circles repeat at no fixed interval, close together in one patch and spread wide in the next, the way waves never quite match their own spacing either. Match a slow breath to tracing one circle at a time across its surface, in when your finger enters a ring and out as it leaves. A few rounds of that tend to slow more than just your finger.

Care and cleansing

Water and sun are both safe for ocean jasper, a hard silica rock. Rinse it at the sink, charge it in daylight by a window, and keep it in a pouch shared with other hard stones.

A question to sit with

Was there a window in your life that never reopened, and did it still count?
