What Moldavite means
Fifteen million years ago, a meteorite struck what is now southern Germany and threw molten glass into the air; moldavite is what cooled from that spray as it fell across Bohemia. Iron tints it bottle green, and long burial in soil has etched its skin into wrinkles and pits.
Emotional properties
You are standing in a kitchen that is suddenly not yours any more, or reading an email that ends a job, and nothing is settled yet. That is the hour for moldavite, green glass that came down on Bohemia just as fast. It does not soften the speed of change, only keeps you company inside it.
Spiritual properties
Moldavite is named for the Moldau, the German name for the Vltava, the Bohemian river near which the first described pieces were found. So much of what is sold under that name today is green glass with no impact behind it at all, which makes an honest piece worth sitting with deliberately. The genuine article and a convincing copy can look identical from across a room, and only close attention tells them apart.
Physical properties
True glass, light for its size and sharp if it breaks, moldavite asks to be handled with a slower, more deliberate grip than a tumbled stone would. That deliberateness is worth borrowing directly: pick it up slowly, set it down slowly, and let your hands set the pace for the rest of you. A stone born from sudden violence, oddly, teaches patience in the hand.
Care and cleansing
Moldavite chips easily at a sharp edge, so handle it gently and keep it clear of harder stones. Wash it in cool water, then charge it under moonlight, not on a hot windowsill, since sudden heat can crack it. Keep it in a soft pouch.
A question to sit with
How fast did the last real change in your life actually arrive?
