What Morganite means

Named in the early twentieth century by the gemologist George Kunz for the financier and collector John Pierpont Morgan, morganite is beryl coloured a warm pink by manganese. It carries the same hardness as emerald and aquamarine, gentleness with real strength underneath it.

Emotional properties

Some people in your life have only ever heard you agree. Wear it into a conversation where you need to say no without becoming someone you don't recognise afterward. Say the no first and plainly, then the kind thing; one does not cancel the other.

Spiritual properties

The paler a gem, the larger it has to be cut before its colour shows, and morganite is often cut big for that reason. Quiet takes more room to be seen, not less, and that is no mark against it. Notice today where you have confused loud with important, and quiet with lesser.

Physical properties

Faceted the way most beryl is cut, morganite shows smooth planes that catch light rather than catching on anything. Rest a pendant at the collarbone when the day has curled your shoulders forward over a desk, and let its faceted weight be the cue to roll them back.

Care and cleansing

Heat can alter morganite's pink, so keep it off radiators and hot sills; ordinary light will not fade it. A soft brush in warm soapy water is all the cleaning it needs. An hour of daylight charges it, and a compartment of a jewellery box keeps it from scratching softer pieces.

A question to sit with

Who taught you that quiet meant lesser?
