What Vanadinite means

Small hexagonal barrels of bright red-orange grow where lead ore has weathered and mixed with vanadium underground. Lead runs through the crystal's own structure, so its brightness asks for a careful hand rather than a casual one.

Emotional properties

A flash of anger or desire arrives fully formed sometimes, too fast to talk yourself out of feeling it. Vanadinite's colour matches that kind of feeling exactly, bright and immediate rather than slow-building. Let it burn behind glass rather than out loud, seen and respected without needing to be acted on right away.

Spiritual properties

Industry once mined vanadinite for vanadium, the metal that, extracted and refined, went on to toughen the steel in early cars and tools. Consider what in you is valuable only once refined and separated from its original, more dangerous form, and what that separation actually costs.

Physical properties

Lead makes up nearly three quarters of vanadinite's weight, and even a walnut-sized cluster weighs more than it looks. In the Six of Wands, its card, a rider comes home wreathed in laurel, and this red belongs to the body's own victory gestures, a fist in the air or a jump at the final whistle. It stays in its case; the celebrating is yours to do.

Care and cleansing

Mostly lead, vanadinite is never for elixirs or children; wash your hands after handling it, and never grind or cut its brittle crystals, since the dust is the danger. It stays out of water, so no lead reaches the sink, and out of bright light, which can darken it. A dry brush cleans it; moonlight through its case charges it.

A question to sit with

Where does an intense feeling deserve to be watched rather than acted on right away?
