What Unakite means
A granite rather than a single mineral, unakite mottles pink feldspar, green epidote and grey quartz together in one rock. The geologist Frank Bradley named it in 1874 for the Unaka Mountains on the North Carolina and Tennessee line.
Emotional properties
Hold unakite when affection and caution are pulling at the same moment, a new friendship, a reconciliation, a yes you are not quite ready to give. Its pink and green share every edge without either one winning. Nobody has to win today, either; both feelings can stay in the room.
Spiritual properties
Deep underground, hot mineral-rich water slowly replaced some of the granite's first minerals with the green epidote unakite wears today. The rock was not spoiled by the change; the change is the reason anyone picks it up. Hold a piece while you look back over a year that altered you further than you meant it to, and count what it added before what it took.
Physical properties
Under the polish, unakite is still granite, coarse-grained and flecked, with the plain heft of a garden stone. A long, unhurried meal suits it, the kind where the body eats at its own pace and nobody checks the time. Seven of Pentacles, its card, shows a gardener pausing over what has grown, and a slow meal is that same pause taken at the table.
Care and cleansing
Granite takes almost anything in its stride, and unakite is granite. Leave it out in a rain shower to cleanse and charge it at once, then let it sit loose in a bowl with any other stone.
A question to sit with
Is your heart outrunning your footing, or your footing outrunning your heart?
