What Black tourmaline means
Little light escapes a polished piece of black tourmaline, its long ridged crystals swallowing almost everything that falls on them. Where other protection announces itself, this stone just quietly declines to let through what is not yours to carry.
Emotional properties
Notice how quickly a tense room ends up living in your jaw, someone else's mood borrowed like a cold before you agreed to catch it. Black tourmaline sits at the edge of that transfer, a fence marking where your feeling ends and the room's begins. Carried through a day full of other people's weather, it gives your own mood somewhere private to stand.
Spiritual properties
Black tourmaline asks for a practice of shedding: at the day's end, name one thing you picked up that was never yours, and set it down beside the stone. In meditation, trace where another person's energy has been setting the terms of your day. It does not ask you to close off from others, only to notice where you left a door open that should be shut.
Physical properties
Warm a tourmaline crystal and it picks up a faint electric charge, enough that Dutch traders once used heated pieces to draw ash out of their pipes. A rod of black tourmaline held at the end of a restless afternoon gives the hands somewhere to go. Thumbs find the ridges along its length without looking.
Care and cleansing
Black tourmaline takes a quick rinse under running water, but its long crystals snap if dropped and crack with sudden heat, so store it where nothing knocks against it. Bury it in a pot of soil overnight to recharge, letting the earth do what it does best for an earth stone.
