What Garnet means
Garnet takes its name from the Latin granatum, pomegranate, for the way its dark red crystals sit inside grey rock like seeds packed into open fruit. It is really a family of related minerals rather than one gem, most of them red but some a clear, bright green.
Emotional properties
Anglo-Saxon smiths set garnets into the sword fittings buried at Sutton Hoo, red stone riding into battle beside a warrior's nerve. A hard season wants that kind of company more than a hard day does, because the second month asks more than the first push ever did. On the mornings your resolve runs short, pin a garnet on before you have decided whether to go on.
Spiritual properties
The fruit behind garnet's name is the one Persephone tasted in the underworld, a few seeds that bound her to return every year. Hold a garnet when you weigh a commitment that will call you back season after season, and ask whether you would eat the seeds again knowing the terms. Some bonds are worth the yearly descent.
Physical properties
Garnet's hardness has made it useful well beyond jewellery, ground down for sandpaper that cuts wood cleanly thanks to how the crystal fractures. Held in the hand, a raw piece still carries some of that same grit, dense and slightly rough rather than polished smooth. Physical work that wants steady, gritty persistence suits it, digging a garden bed, scrubbing a stubborn pan, with a raw piece in your pocket. Its texture argues for finishing the task rather than smoothing it over.
Care and cleansing
Most garnets are hard and tough enough for a rinse under the tap and a soft brush. Charge one on the doorstep in the midday sun. Loose in a jewellery box it will scratch opals and pearls, so give it a compartment of its own.
A question to sit with
Which commitment keeps calling you back, and would you choose it again?
