What Desert rose means
Desert rose forms where gypsum or baryte crystallises in arid sand, grains of the desert caught inside each petal as it grows into a rough stone flower. No two clusters bloom into quite the same shape, each one shaped by the exact patch of ground it grew in.
Emotional properties
Dry spells come to everyone: work gone quiet, a friendship with no news in months, a plan parked without a next step. Desert rose asks you to call that stretch a season, and seasons end. The petals on your shelf took shape in weather drier than any of yours.
Spiritual properties
Slow is the only pace gypsum knows, crystallising grain by grain in sand until a petal finally holds its shape. Set one goal in front of it measured in years rather than weeks. Nothing about the pace can be argued with; the stone simply took as long as it took.
Physical properties
Gritty to the fingertip, desert rose carries sand bound into every thin petal, and it asks to be looked at more than handled. Set it beside a task that cannot be hurried, paint drying between coats, a letter left overnight before you send it. Its slow making is the pace to borrow.
Care and cleansing
Keep desert rose away from water: gypsum roses soften, cloud and slowly dissolve when wet, and they are hard to tell from baryte by eye. Cleanse it with a soft brush or a little smoke instead of a rinse, and let it charge in sunlight. Wrap it in cloth and keep it well clear of anything heavier in the box.
A question to sit with
After a long dry spell, what would count as the first petal?
