What Diamond means
Most diamonds spend a billion years or more compressed in the mantle before a volcanic pipe ever carries one toward daylight. What reaches the surface is carbon simplified down to its clearest, hardest form.
Emotional properties
A choice that matters rarely announces itself all at once; it presses in slowly, one consideration stacked on another, the way heat and weight work on carbon underground. Diamond suits the long, unglamorous middle of a hard decision, not just the final yes. Turn the ring on your finger whenever you feel the pull to decide early, and decide tomorrow.
Spiritual properties
Diamond's name runs back to the Greek adamas, unconquerable, and a vow made over one borrows that word. Before you promise anything that is meant to last, say it aloud in the plainest words you have, with the stone in view. A diamond hides nothing behind colour; a promise worth keeping should hide as little.
Physical properties
Breathe on a diamond and the fog vanishes almost before you see it, because it pulls heat away faster than any other natural material; that is why it stays cold on a fingertip long after glass has warmed. Touch it to the inside of the wrist on a hot, close afternoon for a small, clean shock of cool. Most of its strength is like that, invisible until tested.
Care and cleansing
A sharp knock can split diamond along its cleavage, so take a diamond ring off for rough work, and charge it in morning light. Warm soapy water and a soft brush lift grease from its facets. Only another diamond can scratch it; keep two pieces from sharing a pouch.
