What Dalmatian jasper means
Cream stone freckled with black, dalmatian jasper is not a jasper at all but a feldspar-rich igneous rock from northern Mexico, its dark spots an amphibole called arfvedsonite. It suits a light mood without asking you to pretend nothing serious is underneath.
Emotional properties
Solemnity creeps into chores that never asked for it, the tax form, the garden, the essay on its fourth restart. Set dalmatian jasper beside the stale job and do ten minutes of it badly, on purpose. The spots on the stone never lined up, and nobody minds.
Spiritual properties
No two clusters of dark flecks repeat their pattern exactly across a piece of dalmatian jasper, scattered rather than banded from one stone to the next. Stop expecting this year's growth to trace last year's line. Not every year needs to rhyme with the one before it, and the flecks never do either.
Physical properties
Dense and grainy under the thumb, dalmatian jasper has none of a polished gem's slip. Carry it through an afternoon that wants a light heart more than a heavy hand, a walk with the dog, an hour of nothing scheduled. Its weight is modest, easy to forget until your hand finds it again.
Care and cleansing
Clear dalmatian jasper with a pass of smoke or a few moments of sound rather than a rinse. Charge it in whatever light is going, sun or moon. Toss it in a pouch with other tumbled stones; its speckles hide the odd scuff.
A question to sit with
Could a chore go better if you did it badly, on purpose, for ten minutes?
