What Clear quartz means
The Greek word krystallos meant ice, and early observers guessed clear quartz was simply water frozen too hard to ever melt again. It grows in six-sided points nearly everywhere on earth, plain in colour and endlessly various in shape.
Emotional properties
Too many half-formed thoughts compete for the same attention on a cluttered day, each one talking over the last without finishing its point. Hold a point of clear quartz up to the window and look through it until the room behind it bends. Then pick one thought and finish it.
Spiritual properties
Quartz, the same mineral, keeps time in ordinary watches, and it keeps honest time in meditation too. One honest question held clearly will carry further than a dozen vague ones. Bring one you actually mean.
Physical properties
Six flat faces meet at the tip of a clear quartz point, each sharp enough to throw a thin line of light. After an hour of close work, lift a point to the window and follow that line out to the farthest thing you can see. The far point is a reminder that the close work can wait a minute.
Care and cleansing
Keep a polished clear quartz sphere off a sunny sill: it focuses sunlight like a lens and can scorch whatever sits behind it. Points and tumbled pieces charge happily in sun or moonlight, and a rinse under the tap never hurts quartz. Give it a shelf of its own, since at hardness 7 it scratches most of what it touches.
A question to sit with
If you only got to ask one honest question, what would it be?
