What Cinnabar means
Ground for vermilion pigment since antiquity, this brilliant red ore of mercury forms near volcanic vents and hot springs, born from unstable, restless ground. Chinese lacquerware and Roman wall paint both leaned on its colour, though Roman writers already warned that its dust could kill.
Emotional properties
Temper, excitement, a sudden jolt of fear: cinnabar's red matches feelings that burn hot and fast, kept behind glass rather than carried in a pocket. Look at it instead of holding it, and notice the feeling without needing to touch anything to prove it's real. The colour alone does the honouring.
Spiritual properties
Real transformation is rarely gentle, and it can carry real cost alongside real change, a lesson cinnabar has told since alchemists first heated it into liquid mercury. That old story still points at something true about any startling shift. Respect what it actually costs before you go looking for one.
Physical properties
Cinnabar weighs about three times as much as a quartz of the same size, with mercury locked into every crystal. From behind glass its red is a colour to get up and move toward on a sluggish afternoon, vitality offered to the eye rather than the hand. Leave the case closed; the colour carries through the glass.
Care and cleansing
Mercury makes cinnabar toxic, so never use it in an elixir, never heat, cut or grind it, and always wash your hands after touching it. Keep it dry and out of water; brush off dust rather than rinsing, so nothing washes down the sink. Recharge it in indirect light, and keep it behind glass, away from children and pets.
A question to sit with
Is there a feeling you could watch burn today instead of feeding it?
