What Tourmaline means
Dutch traders in Ceylon called mixed parcels of unsorted gems turamali, the Sinhalese word that gave tourmaline its name. Fittingly, few gems come in so many colours, sometimes several within a single crystal.
Emotional properties
Sort a handful of tourmaline and no two pieces match, not really, even the ones cut from the same rough stone. That variety suits a mood that refuses to hold one colour today, sorrow next to relief, boredom next to a sudden flash of interest. Wear whichever shade matches what you actually feel this morning, not the one you planned on wearing.
Spiritual properties
Squeeze a crystal of tourmaline and it briefly carries an electric charge it makes itself, and warming it does the same, properties called piezoelectricity and pyroelectricity. Consider what in your own life has only ever produced its clearest signal under some kind of pressure, and whether that pressure is worth inviting back on purpose.
Physical properties
Tourmaline grows as long prisms, finely grooved from end to end, and a raw piece lies along the palm rather than curling into a fist. Practice is its territory, the body learning by repetition, scales on a keyboard, a serve against a wall, a row of stitches. Between rounds, draw a thumbnail down one groove, the same line every time, the way a skill gets laid down.
Care and cleansing
Warmth from a lamp or a sunny shelf gives tourmaline a small static charge that pulls in dust, and its long prisms chip if dropped. The occasional rinse and a dry duster keep it clean, a night outdoors on the earth charges it, and each crystal wants its own slot in a box, clear of its neighbours.
