Six of Cups, from the Ishtar Insights tarot deck

What Six of Cups means

Care received before it could be earned leaves an obligation with nobody to discharge it to. Whoever supplied it was not keeping count, or is no longer available to be repaid, and the debt stands regardless, which leaves it one direction to travel: sideways or forwards, towards someone who had no part in incurring it. The Six has always carried gifts and early kindness, and the faint unease that accompanies them belongs to the same mechanism. An inheritance of this sort is an asymmetry running one way through time. Gratitude here has nowhere to be delivered.

Upright

The past can offer warmth, generosity, and a reminder of simple pleasures. Keep what nourishes you while allowing the present to be different.

Reversed

Nostalgia may be editing out an important part of the story. Honor the good without expecting an old arrangement to meet every need you have now.

A question to sit with

Which old source of joy could I bring into my present life?
