What Charoite means

In the Murun massif of eastern Siberia, and nowhere else on earth, a swirling purple stone laced with black and cream turns up in the rock. Charoite takes its name from the Chara River that runs nearby.

Emotional properties

Grief threaded with relief, anger threaded with love: some feelings never sort into one clean pile, and charoite doesn't ask them to. Its purple, black and cream stay tangled rather than banded, layered in a single vein without ever separating into stripes. Carry a piece through a mixed week and let the untidiness be the accurate version, not the problem to fix.

Spiritual properties

Charoite reached Western mineralogists only in 1978, younger as a name than most of the people who now meditate with it. Give the unclassified parts of your own path the same patience the mineralogists had to give it. Not every pattern needs a name before it counts as real.

Physical properties

Charoite takes a high polish yet its surface stays faintly silky rather than glassy, the fibrous crystals inside catching light in a soft sheen. Trace a finger along one of its pale streaks when your thoughts have gone round in the same loop too many times. The eye follows the streak outward, and the loop tends to follow it too.

Care and cleansing

Skip the ultrasonic cleaner; a gentle rinse under cool water suits charoite's fibrous structure better. Charge it in soft daylight rather than harsh midday sun. A soft pouch keeps its polish from meeting anything harder.

A question to sit with

Which feeling would you stop sorting if you knew it could stay mixed?
