What Death means
The card people most often ask to have softened, and softening it is the one thing that empties it. Death names endings: the point after which something does not continue, which no rewording alters. The reassurance that it only ever means change is half true and half nerves, and it is a modern habit; older readers were blunter. Change is what follows an ending, but the ending is real, it comes first, and some of what ends was loved. Its number matters too: thirteen falls in the middle of the sequence and not at the close, so mortality is a structural fact of a life and not its conclusion.
Upright
An old form is ready to end so the living part can continue. Grieve what is complete, clear the space, and let the next shape be different.
Reversed
You may be carrying a chapter past its natural ending. Ask what the attachment is protecting, then loosen your grip one honest inch.
A question to sit with
What is finished even if you have not named it?
