What Labradorite means
Labradorite hides its colour under a plain grey surface until the light finds the right angle, then flashes blue, green and gold the way the aurora moves across a dark sky. Moravian missionaries brought it to European notice from the Labrador coast around 1770.
Emotional properties
The colour in labradorite comes from thin layers inside the stone, each too fine to see, that together throw light back as blue and gold. Years of small, unseen practice build up in you the same way. The day someone finally notices will feel the way the flash does: sudden, though it was there all along.
Spiritual properties
Give labradorite one candle in a dark room and its colour shows more readily than under a ceiling light, since the flash needs light from a single direction. Half-light is the right light for this kind of work: the glimpse is real, but it is not yet the whole picture. Before the candle burns down, write down whatever you saw, even if it makes no sense yet.
Physical properties
Labradorite earns its keep in the dark half of the year, when evenings come early and energy runs low by four o'clock. Tilt it under a desk lamp in the late afternoon until the blue jumps out of the grey, and let that small jolt carry you through the last hour of work. It is a stone for the body's second wind rather than its first.
Care and cleansing
Hard enough for everyday wear but cleaved in two directions, labradorite can chip along an edge if knocked, and does best with its own space rather than a shared dish. A plain rinse cleans it, and a clear night sky charges it.
A question to sit with
Is there a part of you that stays real even when no one is watching?
