What Queen of Pentacles means
A made thing has a finish date; a kept thing has an interval. Those are different relations to time, and only the first leaves anything that can be pointed at afterwards, since the second produces the continued existence of what was already there. Most of what holds a household or a business together is of the second kind: it cannot be completed, only brought up to date, and from the moment it is up to date it begins falling behind again. The unit of such work is the cycle rather than the piece, and that is why it resists being described as an achievement at all. A roof maintained for thirty years and a roof that has never needed anything look the same from the street.
