Five of Swords, from the Ishtar Insights tarot deck

What Five of Swords means

Being out-argued and being convinced look identical from outside and are not the same event. At the Five an exchange stops because one side has run out of material, and the suit’s instrument — the better argument — turns out to settle only the argument. The mechanism never reaches whatever was actually in dispute, which was generally not a proposition at all. Victory of this shape is a fact about the proceedings. The side that stopped talking has not moved, and now holds a grievance it did not hold before, arising from the manner rather than the matter. What ends at the Five is the exchange. The disagreement was never a party to it.

Upright

Winning an exchange can still damage what you hoped to protect. Examine the cost of the contest and choose whether repair, a boundary, or departure serves better.

Reversed

A conflict may be ready for a different ending. Take responsibility for your part while deciding what would need to change for reconciliation to be meaningful.

A question to sit with

What would a useful resolution protect besides my pride?
