What hexagram 6 means

Heaven moves upward while Water beneath it flows down, two directions pulling apart from the start. Where interests diverge this sharply, a fair hearing matters more than winning.

A question to sit with

What would a fair hearing of this disagreement actually require?

The six lines, bottom to top

A changing line is read on its own. These are original reflections written for this site, not a translation.

Line 1 · The beginning

Early in a dispute, letting the matter drop after a few words can save much trouble. If a disagreement is only beginning, consider whether it is worth pursuing at all. Small concessions now can keep a minor issue from hardening.

Line 2 · The inner position

The image here is of someone who cannot win the contest and returns home to a small town. Retreating from a struggle you cannot sustain protects the people who depend on you. Where might stepping back be the stronger choice?

Line 3 · The threshold

Living on what you have long earned, and serving without seeking recognition, keeps a quiet dignity. If you are tempted to press for more, consider holding to what is already yours. Old, steady foundations can carry you through a tense moment.

Line 4 · Entering the outer

Picture a quarrel set down on the ground and left there. Taking up a different stance can matter more than holding your position. What would change if you let this contest go?

Line 5 · The position of authority

Bringing the dispute before a fair arbiter sits well in this central place of authority. When you are in a position to judge or to seek judgement, fairness serves everyone involved. Who could offer an impartial hearing here?

Line 6 · The end, and excess

A leather belt awarded and then taken away three times in a day pictures a win that does not last. At the peak of contention, pressing a dispute to the end can leave little that holds. Ask whether the victory you seek would still feel worth it tomorrow.
