What hexagram 7 means
Water collects beneath the surface of Earth, numerous and hidden until it is drawn on with purpose. Shared effort holds together only when its direction stays clear to everyone involved.
A question to sit with
What shared effort needs clearer direction to stay coordinated?
The six lines, bottom to top
A changing line is read on its own. These are original reflections written for this site, not a translation.
Line 1 · The beginning
Before any march, the ranks of an army are set in order. Clear structure and purpose give everyone something to follow. What agreements need to be in place before you begin?
Line 2 · The inner position
The commander who stays close to the ranks is the one trusted to lead. If you are guiding others, being present among them matters as much as your authority. How could your leadership stay grounded in the people you work with?
Line 3 · The threshold
Here a campaign bringing home its losses pictures command taken up without the fitness or authority to hold it. Notice whether whoever is leading has real readiness. Consider whether roles and responsibilities are clear enough.
Line 4 · Entering the outer
Withdrawing the troops to a safer position is a sensible choice when conditions do not favour advancing. When you move into a wider sphere, a strategic retreat can protect what you have built. Where might stepping back be wiser than pressing on?
Line 5 · The position of authority
Game in the field calls for a response, and the task is to choose the right person to lead it. Entrusting the effort to someone experienced, rather than to whoever is eager, keeps the undertaking sound. Who is truly ready to carry this responsibility?
Line 6 · The end, and excess
Once the fighting is over, rewards and roles are handed out and a new order is set up. It matters here that those given lasting responsibility are suited to it. As one effort closes, consider who should shape what comes next.
