What hexagram 5 means

Heaven waits beneath gathering Water, like clouds that have not yet released their rain. Preparation can continue even when the outcome cannot be hurried into view.

A question to sit with

What preparation can continue while I wait for the right moment?

The six lines, bottom to top

A changing line is read on its own. These are original reflections written for this site, not a translation.

Line 1 · The beginning

Waiting in a distant meadow, far from the source of difficulty, allows ordinary life to continue. If what you are waiting for is still far off, keep to your steady routines. There is no need to spend energy on a problem that has not yet arrived.

Line 2 · The inner position

Waiting on sand, closer to the water, may bring a little gossip or friction. Staying calm and centred lets small disturbances pass without drawing you in. What would help you stay patient even when others are restless?

Line 3 · The threshold

Waiting in the mud at the water’s edge leaves you exposed and easily caught off balance. You may have moved closer than conditions allow. Consider whether a step back would give you firmer footing while you wait.

Line 4 · Entering the outer

A pit ringed by strife is the image here, and it calls for stepping out rather than enduring. As you enter a wider world, it is sensible to remove yourself from conflict you cannot resolve. Where might withdrawing be a wiser form of waiting?

Line 5 · The position of authority

Waiting at a table of food and wine pictures rest and nourishment during an interval. From a settled place of influence, it can be fitting to recover strength while the outcome ripens. How could you use this pause to restore yourself?

Line 6 · The end, and excess

At the close of waiting come visitors nobody sent for. Rather than guarding against them, consider how you might receive them with respect and hear what they bring.
