What The Hermit means

Solitude here is a method, not a mood. Two things sit inside it at once, and neither cancels the other. The first is the guide: someone who has gone further along a road and can report what is there, which is the oldest reason anyone tolerated a hermit at all. The second is the distance that made the guide worth consulting, which is also what makes the return awkward — go far enough for the view and the road back becomes a real question. Understanding arrived at this way is built rather than handed over, which lends it an unusual durability and a particular blind spot, since nothing argued with it on the way.

A little chosen solitude will clarify what constant input has blurred. Carry the lantern close and look for the next true step, not the whole staircase.

Reversed

Withdrawal may be protecting an old pattern rather than offering insight. Keep the quiet, but let one trusted person know where you are.
