Ace of Wands, from the Ishtar Insights tarot deck

What Ace of Wands means

Its traditional line calls this the root of the powers of Fire. Root is the exact word for it. A root is the buried part and the supplying part, and it resembles none of what grows out of it: a root is not a small version of the plant. What the Ace holds is therefore the suit’s supply and none of its uses — the heat the other thirteen draw on, present undiminished whether they draw on it well, badly, or not at all. The card says nothing about what that heat is for, or whether anybody has yet found a use for it. Every other Wand is a variation played on it.

Upright

An idea has heat before it has a plan. Give the spark a small place to land: a sketch, a first conversation, or a protected hour of making.

Reversed

A stalled beginning may need better conditions rather than more pressure. Find out whether the spark is yours, and give it room to return.

A question to sit with

What idea would I enjoy testing without promising to finish it?

Traditional attribution

The root of the powers of Fire. Attributions follow the Golden Dawn with Waite's numbering.
