Hexagram 23: Bō 剝

What hexagram 23 means

A Mountain here rests almost directly on Earth, worn down until little holds its shape above the ground. When a structure has eroded this far, protecting what remains matters more than defending the whole.

A question to sit with

What remaining part is worth protecting now that the whole has changed?

The six lines, bottom to top

A changing line is read on its own. These are original reflections written for this site, not a translation.

Line 1 · The beginning

The leg of a bed splitting shows erosion starting at the foundation. Notice where support is wearing away quietly beneath you. Where the undermining belongs to the season, noticing it matters more than insisting against it.

Line 2 · The inner position

Erosion now reaches the frame of the bed, closer to where you rest. Where support feels scarce, caution and patience are wiser than bold moves. Hold on to what is still sound.

Line 3 · The threshold

Stepping away from a group that is wearing things down can be right, even if it leaves you somewhat alone. Consider where you are being carried along by a decline you do not endorse. Separating from it can keep your integrity intact.

Line 4 · Entering the outer

Erosion reaches the skin in this line, close to the body rather than the surroundings. If the wearing-away reaches you personally, focus on protecting what is essential. There is little to gain from pretending the change has not arrived.

Line 5 · The position of authority

A string of fish, orderly and led from the front, suggests a way of bringing order to what is receding. You can guide a decline towards something constructive. Grace in how things wind down is itself a form of leadership.

Line 6 · The end, and excess

One large fruit remains uneaten on the bare branch, holding the seed of what comes next. Where most has fallen away, look for the kernel still worth keeping. Renewal often begins with what the erosion could not reach.
