What hexagram 22 means

Fire’s light plays across a still Mountain, decorating its surface without changing what the mountain is underneath. Presentation can add real warmth, though substance still sits beneath the decoration.

A question to sit with

Where does presentation matter less than what sits underneath it?

The six lines, bottom to top

A changing line is read on its own. These are original reflections written for this site, not a translation.

Line 1 · The beginning

Adorning your feet and choosing to walk rather than ride is a modest beginning. Where an easier, more showy path is on offer, consider whether walking suits your purpose better. Simplicity keeps you honest.

Line 2 · The inner position

Grooming a beard is decoration that follows the shape of the face beneath it. Adornment works best when it serves the substance it rests on. Ask what your presentation is really following.

Line 3 · The threshold

Something glows and gleams with ornament, pleasant and even a little intoxicating. If charm is carrying you along, keep a steady hold on what is lasting. Grace remains useful when it does not replace substance.

Line 4 · Entering the outer

A white horse arrives, and its rider comes courting, not raiding. At the entry to the outer world, plainness can be more welcoming than elaborate display. Consider whether simplicity would say what you mean more clearly.

Line 5 · The position of authority

A garden on the hills, offered with only a modest roll of silk, describes a gift that looks small beside its setting. Sincerity can outweigh the size of what you give. Let the honesty of the gesture carry it.

Line 6 · The end, and excess

Adornment becomes plain white, ornament stripped back to its simplest form. Where decoration has run its course, notice what remains when it falls away. Simplicity here is a finish, not an absence.
