What hexagram 60 means
Water rests within the bounds of a Lake that gives it shape rather than letting it spread without limit. A workable limit, chosen deliberately, tends to hold better than one imposed only after things went too far.
A question to sit with
What deliberate limit would serve better than one imposed after the fact?
The six lines, bottom to top
A changing line is read on its own. These are original reflections written for this site, not a translation.
Line 1 · The beginning
Staying inside your own doorway while the way ahead is unclear is the first image of measure. Knowing when not to go out, and keeping your counsel, is a limit well chosen.
Line 2 · The inner position
Staying inside the gate when the moment calls for going out turns restraint into hesitation. Consider whether a limit that once served you has outlasted its purpose.
Line 3 · The threshold
Where nothing is held in check, the aftermath of overdoing it can feel heavy. If you have let things run beyond measure, the honest response is to own it and set a boundary now.
Line 4 · Entering the outer
A limit accepted with ease, rather than with strain, is one you no longer have to argue with. Measure that feels natural tends to last.
Line 5 · The position of authority
The image is a sweet limit, one that others can accept because you live by it first. Restraint you practise yourself becomes an example worth following.
Line 6 · The end, and excess
A limit pressed until it turns bitter is the closing image. If strictness has begun to harm more than it helps, ease it, though there are times when a hard limit is still the right one.
