What hexagram 56 means
Fire moves across the surface of a Mountain without settling into any one place on it, the way a traveler passes through unfamiliar ground. Adaptability and courtesy serve you well when you are somewhere you do not yet belong.
A question to sit with
Where am I still learning the customs of unfamiliar ground?
The six lines, bottom to top
A changing line is read on its own. These are original reflections written for this site, not a translation.
Line 1 · The beginning
Fussing over small change and minor grievances on the road can crowd out the journey itself. In unfamiliar ground, small-mindedness can close doors that dignity would keep open.
Line 2 · The inner position
The traveller reaches an inn with means to hand and a loyal companion found along the way. When you are settled in a modest, secure place, courtesy helps keep what support you have.
Line 3 · The threshold
The image is an inn catching fire and a companion lost through harsh treatment. A high-handed manner in someone else’s place can cost you the shelter you had.
Line 4 · Entering the outer
Here the traveller finds a resting place and the means to defend it, yet the heart is not fully at ease. A foothold in the wider world may still feel provisional, and that unease is worth acknowledging.
Line 5 · The position of authority
A pheasant brought down at the cost of a single arrow is the image for this place of authority. A small outlay made with skill can earn recognition and a place among strangers.
Line 6 · The end, and excess
The image here is a bird whose nest catches fire, laughter turning to tears. If carelessness has cost the steady support you relied on, ask what a humbler bearing would restore.
