What hexagram 39 means
Water meets a Mountain squarely in its path and cannot continue straight ahead. A route that requires a detour is still a route, and finding allies for the crossing matters more than forcing it alone.
A question to sit with
Who could help with this crossing instead of attempting it alone?
The six lines, bottom to top
A changing line is read on its own. These are original reflections written for this site, not a translation.
Line 1 · The beginning
Pressing ahead at the very start of an obstruction tends to entangle you further. Pausing here, and waiting for a better moment, can be the more respected choice.
Line 2 · The inner position
Some hardships arrive through duty rather than through any choice of yours, one difficulty following another. If you are carrying that kind of load, working through it for the sake of others is a meaningful choice.
Line 3 · The threshold
Facing a wall, turning back towards home and the people who rely on you makes sense. Return here is not failure but a way of staying where you are most needed.
Line 4 · Entering the outer
Joining forces before the crossing is worth more than any lone attempt at the far bank. As you enter wider circles, a pause to gather allies can turn a blocked road into a shared one.
Line 5 · The position of authority
Whoever holds steady in the thick of a great obstruction becomes a point others can rally to. That steadiness draws helpers towards a common effort.
Line 6 · The end, and excess
Even at the very end of an impasse, simply walking away from the struggle is not the whole answer. Turning back towards the shared task, and seeking out someone of real stature, can open a larger way through.
