What hexagram 36 means
Fire’s brightness sits beneath Earth here, its light held in rather than shown outward. Some understanding is better kept quiet for a while, protected until conditions can receive it.
A question to sit with
What understanding might be safer kept quiet for now?
The six lines, bottom to top
A changing line is read on its own. These are original reflections written for this site, not a translation.
Line 1 · The beginning
A bird lowering its wings in flight suggests leaving quietly while the light dims. Where you step away from a situation early, others may not understand, and going without a full explanation can be acceptable.
Line 2 · The inner position
Hurt in the left thigh, the traveller can still be carried by a strong horse. If something has slowed you, look for sturdy help, and put your energy into helping others through as well.
Line 3 · The threshold
Hunting in the south can bring the source of the darkness itself into view. Even when the cause is visible, change that runs deep is best made gradually rather than all at once.
Line 4 · Entering the outer
Close enough to see what lies at the core of a troubled situation, you can read it for what it is. From the edge of the outer world, that clear sight may be the cue to step away quietly while the way out is still open.
Line 5 · The position of authority
Prince Ji kept his light inside while appearing to go along with a difficult court. From a place of responsibility, protecting your integrity may mean keeping your clarity to yourself for a while.
Line 6 · The end, and excess
A light that rose too high burns through its own fuel and goes dim. A darkness that has overreached has little left to feed on, and your task is to wait and keep your own light.
