What hexagram 26 means
Holding back the vast energy of Heaven, a Mountain stores that force instead of releasing it. Great capacity, kept in check for a while, can be gathered into something more deliberate.
A question to sit with
What capacity am I gathering that is not ready for release yet?
The six lines, bottom to top
A changing line is read on its own. These are original reflections written for this site, not a translation.
Line 1 · The beginning
Difficulty ahead is the reason to hold back. Where you feel ready to push forward, consider whether stopping for now would preserve your strength. Restraint is not the same as retreat.
Line 2 · The inner position
Removing the axle straps from a cart means choosing not to travel for now. Stepping back voluntarily keeps energy intact for a better moment. Consider what you gain by pausing on purpose.
Line 3 · The threshold
Good horses running together suggest the time to move is approaching. Forward motion benefits from preparation and awareness of hazards. Keep training alongside advancing.
Line 4 · Entering the outer
A guard board fixed across a young bull’s horns prevents harm before the horns have grown. At the entry to the outer world, gentle early restraint is easier than later struggle. Consider where a small limit set now would spare effort later.
Line 5 · The position of authority
The tusk of a gelded boar loses its threat because the force behind it has been changed at the root. Addressing the source of a problem works better than fighting its symptom. Ask where the real drive behind a difficulty lies.
Line 6 · The end, and excess
A road through the open sky is the image, and stored energy is finally released. Where you have held back long enough, notice that the way ahead may now be clear. Accumulation reaches its purpose when it moves.
