Hexagram 20: Guān 觀

What hexagram 20 means

Passing over Earth’s surface, Wind touches everything without settling anywhere in particular. A wide, unhurried view can reveal a pattern that closer inspection would miss.

A question to sit with

What pattern becomes visible only from a wider view?

The six lines, bottom to top

A changing line is read on its own. These are original reflections written for this site, not a translation.

Line 1 · The beginning

A child’s way of looking sees surfaces without grasping the pattern beneath. Seeing that way is natural enough in someone young, though anyone responsible for others may need a wider view. Notice where you are looking only at what is closest.

Line 2 · The inner position

Glimpsing the world through a narrow gap in a door gives a partial picture. If your view feels limited by where you stand, consider what lies beyond the frame. A small opening is a start, not the whole scene.

Line 3 · The threshold

Ask what your recent conduct suggests about going on or holding back. Consider what your recent choices reveal about the direction you are really taking. Honest self-observation steadies the next move.

Line 4 · Entering the outer

Here you can observe how a larger community is ordered and what it offers. Where you have a chance to contribute, weigh whether the setting welcomes your gifts. Being a good guest means watching before acting.

Line 5 · The position of authority

The effects of your life on others become the clearest measure of it. Look at the people around you and what your example shows them. Contemplation here turns outward into responsibility.

Line 6 · The end, and excess

Seeing your own life almost from the outside, free of the need for position, is the vantage of the top line. Where you stand apart from the action, ask what your conduct looks like to a detached observer. This distance can bring a calm, clear accounting.
