Hexagram 2: Kūn 坤

What hexagram 2 means

Earth doubled describes a capacity to hold and carry, not to initiate on its own. Strength here looks like patience, support, and the willingness to let another force lead first.

A question to sit with

Where could steady support matter more than being first?

The six lines, bottom to top

A changing line is read on its own. These are original reflections written for this site, not a translation.

Line 1 · The beginning

Frost underfoot hints that deeper cold is on its way. Small signs of a turning season tend to point to where things are heading. Notice what the early details are telling you before they become harder to change.

Line 2 · The inner position

The earth at this central place is plain and steady, content simply to be ground. When you act from your own settled nature, effort can feel lighter. Trust what comes naturally to you in territory you know well.

Line 3 · The threshold

Hidden brightness describes quality that does not need to be displayed to be real. If you are serving a larger effort, you can contribute fully without claiming the credit. Let the work carry its own weight for now.

Line 4 · Entering the outer

A sack tied shut keeps its contents safe and out of view. As you step into a wider circle, some discretion may protect what is still forming. Consider what is better held back for the moment rather than said aloud.

Line 5 · The position of authority

A yellow lower garment, the colour of the centre worn modestly below, suggests authority held without show. Where you have real standing, a quiet and grounded manner can carry more weight than display. How might you lead in a way that keeps the focus on what matters?

Line 6 · The end, and excess

Dragons meeting in open country picture a receptive force that has pushed until it clashes with the active one. When yielding turns into rivalry, both sides tend to be worn down. Look at where holding your ground has become a contest nobody needs.
