Hexagram 16: Yù 豫

What hexagram 16 means

Earth’s stillness breaks open as Thunder surges above it, releasing energy that had been building underneath. Shared enthusiasm can carry a group a long way, provided excitement is matched by real preparation.

A question to sit with

Is the excitement here matched by preparation, or running ahead of it?

The six lines, bottom to top

A changing line is read on its own. These are original reflections written for this site, not a translation.

Line 1 · The beginning

Enthusiasm that announces itself too loudly can draw attention before there is substance behind it. If you are excited about something new, let your energy build quietly first. What would it mean to let your work speak before your words do?

Line 2 · The inner position

Like a keel holding a boat steady, this central line marks the right moment and moves on it at once. Steadiness here helps you tell when to act and when to stop. Where might a clear, grounded response serve you better than being swept along?

Line 3 · The threshold

Taking your cue from those above can leave you stalled. If you are waiting for outside momentum, your own may go unused. Consider whether it is time to move under your own power.

Line 4 · Entering the outer

A clasp gathering loose strands of hair pictures the one who draws others together here. Confidence and sincerity can bring people in without any need to press. How could your steady conviction help others join in?

Line 5 · The position of authority

A long-standing strain that continues without giving way marks this line. From a position of influence, pressure that never lets up can keep you from fully enjoying the moment, yet it may also keep you alert. What steady pressure might be worth understanding rather than simply resisting?

Line 6 · The end, and excess

Enthusiasm that has fooled itself can still change course. Seeing through the illusion, even late, allows a new direction. Where might an honest reassessment free you from misplaced excitement?
